He trained on the T-2 Buckeye and A-4 Skyhawk in Beeville, Texas, and graduated as a naval aviator in 1989.
Kelly flew the F-14 Tomcat after completing his initial F-14 training at VF-101 and was later assigned to VF-143 where he deployed to the North Atlantic and Persian Gulf.
