The films included “Sweet Jesus, Preacher Man” and “Black Belt Jones.” In 1975, Gibbs became known for her role as Florence Johnston in the CBS comedy series The Jeffersons.

Despite her success on The Jeffersons, Gibbs continued working as a reservations agent at United Airlines for the first two years.

She juggled daytime studio work and nighttime shifts at the airline. As the show gained popularity, CBS asked her to take a leave of absence from her airline job.

Gibbs received acclaim for her performance, earning five Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe nomination. In 1981, she starred in the short-lived spin-off Checking In. In a 2015 interview, Gibbs revealed that Florence was inspired by her aunt and grandmother.
